At the beginning of April 2019, Project Wing<\/strong>, owned by Alphabet<\/strong> and specializing in developing drone delivery services, launched the very first commercial air delivery service in North Canberra in Australia<\/strong>, providing its customers with fresh groceries, medications and hot coffee from several local businesses. The Wing application allows shoppers to command and receive delivery within 30 minutes.<\/p>\r\n

The successful testing in Australia has resulted in the expansion of\u00a0<\/span>Wing<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<\/span>United States<\/span><\/b>;\u00a0<\/span><\/b>The Federal Aviation Administration has certified\u00a0<\/span>Alphabet\u2019s\u00a0Wing\u00a0Aviation to operate as an airline. This signifies that\u00a0<\/span>Wing\u00a0can begin a commercial service delivering goods from local businesses to homes in the United States.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

For now, the Company will operate in Blacksburg, Virginia, delivering commercial packages weighing up to 3 pounds using their 11-pound vertical-lift aircraft. By developing these delivery drones, Alphabet aims to reinvents the retail delivery system that will connect customers with local merchants, and put Alphabet in direct competition with Amazon\u2019s<\/strong> unmanned delivery service, Prime Air<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Microsoft bets on autonomous flights.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span>The Project AirSim<\/strong> is the name of the platform launched by Microsoft to impulse AI-powered flights.<\/strong> AirSim<\/strong> offers better use of Data, IA, and libraries of simulated 3D environments representing various urban and rural landscapes. It has made possible simulations to train autonomous aerial vehicles. With AirSim, Microsoft<\/strong> can test how well drones work when it rains or snows, or if strong winds or high temperatures would affect battery life.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Uber Eats is currently testing out an autonomus delivery system<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

The food delivery app is testing an autonomous delivery solution in Santa Monica (California). To do so, the brand is partnering with Motional a company co-created by Hyundai and Aptiv. For now, no details have been released about this first
trial. The autonomous vehicle selected for this mission should be the Hyundai IONIQ 5<\/strong> from Motional. This category of autonomous vehicle doesn\u2019t require any human intervention. As consumers are waiting for more convenience and
rapidity, many of these solutions are currently being tested in major cities. It will also be a way of responding to the growing
competition from quick commerce players who are pushing other delivery operators to redouble their efforts to remain in the race.<\/p>\r\n

Well now<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>hanks to\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0partnership between\u00a0<\/span>Unilever<\/b>\u00a0(the parent company of\u00a0<\/span>Ben & Jerry\u2019s<\/b>)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and a drone\u00a0<\/span>start-up<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Terra<\/b>\u00a0<\/b>Drone<\/b>\u00a0<\/b>Europe<\/b>, ice-cream\u00a0<\/span>might soon be<\/span>\u00a0delivered by drone.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Both\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>ompanies are test<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0of drone<\/span>–<\/span>delivery<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>New York<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>A\u00a0<\/span>press release stated that the\u00a0<\/span>Partnership<\/span>\u00a0is preparing for a drone logistics service that will deliver products to more customers faster.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Regulations around future drone flights are expected to become more flexible, notably with the first commercial drone deliveries launched in Australia and in some areas of the United States. The race to develop delivery drones has well and truly begun, with Amazon, Uber, Google<\/strong> and many other smaller drone technology start-ups, ready for take-off. The future of will largely depend on how quickly legislation can be established where it is lacking in most countries around the globe. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Amazon<\/b>\u00a0is the first company to receive FAA<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>certificat<\/span>ion<\/span>, after UPS and\u00a0<\/span>Alphabet\u2019s<\/b>\u00a0Wing<\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) has designed the retailer an \u201cair carrier<\/span>,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0paving the way for Amazon to start testing commercial\u00a0<\/span>drone<\/span>\u00a0flights capable of delivering packages.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Jeff Bezos has been talking about done delivery since 2013, and\u00a0<\/span>h<\/span>is vision could finally become a reality. The company will have to submit evidence of the safety of the operations to the agency.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

JD.com<\/strong> is also using drones to deliver goods to customers in China<\/strong>, at a time when the country is virtually shut down to prevent further spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus. Apart from mobilizing resources to provide immediate support in the fight against the virus, the Company is launching robot and drone deliveries using its AI technology to facilitate last-mile delivery. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

JD.com\u00a0<\/span>has\u00a0<\/span>previously used self-driving vehicles to deliver batch<\/span>es<\/span>\u00a0of goods to a hospital in the Wuhan province.\u00a0<\/span>D<\/span>rone delivery is part of\u00a0<\/span>JD.com\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>initiatives<\/span>\u00a0to ensure timely and safe shipments during a critical time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n
